The original serenity prayer is widely attributed to Reinhold
Niebuhr and is perhaps one of the most universal prayers used by
by persons of faith throughout the world. The original serenity prayer is longer than the "AA" or
Alcoholics Anonymous version, which is shortened a bit. Darby Creek Trading has a complete collection of
serenity prayer
plaques, serenity prayer prints, and other inspirational
gift items.
The term "full serenity prayer" is used interchangeably with the "original serenity prayer" to distinguish it from the aa serenity prayer.

Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, utilized the serenity prayer as the "aa serenity prayer" to encourage people with alcohol addictions to ask God's help in accepting what they are, while at the same time, granting them courage to change the things the can. In another words, Bill felt that all Alcoholics were able, with God's help, to rid their dependence on alcohol while accepting that fact of the disease that could be arrested. The version referred in AA publications is simply the first paragraph of the prayer and not a "modified" version. Nearly all 12 step programs for various addictions utilize the Serenity Prayer as the central profession of hope that the can overcome their addictions.
