The Prayer of Saint Francis is widely believed to have been
written by
St. Francis of Assisi. Francis
practiced what he preached and lived his life in a manner that
truly reflected the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Prayer
of St Francis reflects how he submitted himself to God to be
used as an instrument to spread love and joy to those who knew
only hate and sadness. The prayer of St. Francis is one of
the most meaningful prayers ever written and reflects how St.
Francis lived his life and how we should strive to live ours.

The founders of Darby Creek Trading are huge fans of St Francis and might even be considered Francis groupies. As such, they have created a line of various Prayer of St. Francis art that inscribes the prayer on canvas, wood, and statues. Please see all of our St. Francis Prayer Plaques, St. Francis statues, and St. Francis garden stones.
Versions of Saint Francis Prayer
There are numerous versions of this prayer. We have chosen the two most popular versions of the prayer. One version is the most widely published while the other is a version used as the 11th step Prayer as written in Chapter 11 of the book "Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions" by Alcoholics Anonymous. Both versions are equally beautiful.
#1 Version:
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
#2 Version
Lord, make me a channel of thy peace;
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of
forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be
comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.
Amen.
